Whew! It's hot here!
Strange weather, this global warming spring! There's a mountain of snow in some parts of the country, and we're having a heat wave in southern California. It's in the 100's here in the real OC, setting records. And fires too, which we typically don't see until the fall.

But we've got cool baby clothes for you, toddler clothes too. Summer will get here, and we have baby shorts, beach shirts, hats, tees, and more.

Save gas, buy on-line. Easy, quick, economical.

Building permits
We recently moved Frogs Frills and Daffodils to a new home. More warehouse space, less travel, all the right causes.

But for some reason, the inventory racks that were perfectly acceptable in Anaheim are an issue in our new city. We needed a building permit to put them up, imagine! They wanted the assembly isntructions. Gosh. The manufacturer doesn't print assembly instructions, these things are easy enough for a 6 year old with Tinkertoy experience to assemble. Tools needed: hammer.

We needed an "engineering plan", so we drew one up on a single sheet of 8 1/2 X 11 copier paper. We were then charged $147 for one hour's plan review time, which took three weeks. One hour? For one sheet of paper? Piracy!

We still don't have a permit to occupy our facility, after being here almost two months. The inspector comes again tomorrow. I can't wait.

Why do local governments feel the need to harrass businesses?

Talcum powder
Things change. Out on the desert of southern California are a lot of old mines and abandoned ghost towns. One of the significant resources mined was talc. A soft, white, slippery kind of rock that became baby talcum powder. The talc veins are evident white areas visible for miles. But, talc has some asbestos. Ouuuuh! Bad stuff! So the talc mines shut down, the townsites were left, and are interesting places to visit if you are adventurous.

Today, the powder we use is synthetic. And shopping is done on the Internet. We have the cool baby clothes and toddler clothes you'll just love. Giftwrap and greeting cards too. Fast shipping, great prices, cool styles. New products arriving constantly.

Sperry wash trip
This has nothing to do with washing clothes with a Sperry appliance. Sperry Wash is out on the California desert, beyond the eastern side of Death Valley NP. It was once the route of a mis-planned railroad, long since removed (1942). There is a townsite, barely noticable now, named for Grace Sperry. You'll surely know that name from somewhere. Well, maybe not.

The Amaragosa River runs thru the wash (a kind of canyon, that is generally dry), a strange sight in this arid country. It's called a River here, but it'd be barely a minor creek in Ohio.

Of course this area was for mining. Gold and silver at first, later lead and talc, it was all over by 1950. There was once a paved road on this route, and evidence remains in places. but the desert weather is very unforgiving, and the pavement is just a ghost of what was. Sperry Wash now requires four wheel drive, and some guts.

It's an interesting trip. The south end is near the DuMont Dunes, the north end comes out ... more
